Visa Subclass 417 – Working Holiday Visa Australia

Live, Work, and Explore Australia for Up to Three Years — The World's Most Popular Working Holiday Program

Australia's Working Holiday Visa is one of the most recognised visa programs in the world. For young adults from eligible countries, it offers something genuinely rare — the freedom to live and work in a country as vast and varied as Australia without being tied to a single employer, a single city, or a single industry. You can spend three months in the Northern Territory on a cattle station, three months in Melbourne working in hospitality, and three months in Queensland helping with the mango harvest. All on the same visa.

The Visa Subclass 417 Working Holiday Visa is the formal name for this program as it applies to citizens of 19 eligible countries — primarily European nations, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. What makes the Subclass 417 more complex — and where professional advice genuinely helps — is the second and third year extension system and the specified work requirements that determine whether you qualify for those extensions.

At Migration Republic, our MARA-registered migration agents assist with Subclass 417 applications, second and third year extension assessments, specified work compliance advice, and the onward visa pathways that some working holiday makers pursue after their three years in Australia.

Visa Overview

What is the Visa Subclass 417?

The Visa Subclass 417 Working Holiday Visa is a temporary visa that allows eligible young adults from 19 specified countries to live, work, and travel in Australia for up to 12 months per visa grant. A holder can apply for a second and third Subclass 417 visa, giving a maximum of up to three years in Australia across three separate 12-month visa periods.

The visa is designed to foster cultural exchange and international goodwill while addressing genuine workforce needs in Australia's agricultural, horticultural, regional tourism, and construction industries. The Subclass 417 is distinct from the Subclass 462 Work and Holiday Visa — both are working holiday visas, but they serve different eligible countries and the second and third year extension rules differ between them.

Visa Benefits

Key Benefits of the Visa Subclass 417

01

Complete Work Flexibility

The Subclass 417 allows you to work in any industry and for any employer in Australia — from hospitality and retail in the cities, to agriculture and construction in the regions. There is no occupation restriction, no skills test, and no employer tie. You can take short-term casual work, seasonal positions, or even a consistent professional role for up to six months with the same employer.

02

Up to Three Years in Australia

By completing specified work in regional industries, most nationalities can extend their stay to a second and then a third year — giving up to three years of combined working holiday time in Australia. This is one of the most generous working holiday programs in the world in terms of maximum stay duration.

03

No Cap, No Ballot, No Waiting List

Unlike many other skilled or nominated visa pathways, the Subclass 417 has no annual cap and no invitation system. If you are eligible, you apply, and you receive the visa. There is no queue to join and no limit on numbers granted per year.

04

Affordable Entry Cost

At AUD $640 for the application fee, the Subclass 417 is one of the lowest-cost visa pathways to Australia. When you consider the 12-month period of legal work and travel rights it provides, it represents exceptional value for eligible applicants.

05

Multi-Entry and Free Travel Rights

The Subclass 417 allows you to travel in and out of Australia as many times as you wish during the 12-month validity period. There is also no geographic restriction — you can live in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or any regional town, and move around Australia freely.

06

Pathway to Further Visas

While the Subclass 417 is not itself a pathway to permanent residency, many working holiday makers use their time in Australia to build skills, establish employer relationships, and qualify for onward visa options — including the Subclass 482, the Subclass 190 or 491, or even the Subclass 189 for those who build a competitive points profile.

Second and Third Year — Critical Information

The Specified Work Requirement — How to Qualify for Year Two and Three

The extension system is the most important and most misunderstood part of the Subclass 417 framework. Many first-year holders assume that any work in regional Australia will count toward their second year eligibility. It does not. Specified work has a specific legal definition — and getting it wrong means returning home without the second year.

April 2025 Update — Eligible Industries and Postcodes ExpandedAs of 5 April 2025, the Department of Home Affairs updated the specified work list and the eligible postcodes — expanding the areas for bushfire and natural disaster recovery work. This update applies to Subclass 417 applications lodged on or after 5 April 2025, or applications lodged but not decided by that date.

Approved Industries for Specified Work

  • Plant and animal cultivation in regional Australia — fruit picking, vegetable harvesting, crop planting, farm work, shearing, livestock management, dairy production
  • Fishing and pearling in regional Australia
  • Tree farming and felling in regional Australia
  • Mining in regional Australia
  • Construction in regional Australia
  • Tourism and hospitality in remote or very remote areas
  • Bushfire and natural disaster recovery in eligible postcodes (expanded April 2025)
  • Critical healthcare in regional, remote, or very remote areas
  • Aged and disability care in regional, remote, or very remote areas

Duration and Evidence Requirements

  • Second Subclass 417: at least 88 calendar days (3 months) of specified work while holding the first year visa
  • Third Subclass 417: at least 176 calendar days (6 months) of specified work while holding the second year visa
  • Work does not need to be consecutive — it can be spread across multiple employers and locations
  • Voluntary work does not count — work must be paid
  • Payslips covering the period of work
  • Employer letter confirming role, location, hours, and dates on company letterhead
  • Bank statements showing salary deposits
  • Do not discard payslips or employment paperwork during your working holiday year
UK Citizens — No Specified Work Required from 1 July 2024As of 1 July 2024, UK citizens — including BNO passport holders — who hold a Subclass 417 are exempt from the specified work requirements for both the second and third year extensions. UK citizens can apply for their second and third Subclass 417 visas without completing any specified regional work. This exemption was introduced under the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement.

The Six-Month Employer Rule

You cannot work for the same employer for more than six calendar months unless the Department of Home Affairs grants specific permission for an exception. This applies to all employers — not just regional ones. Working beyond six months with the same employer is a breach of visa conditions that can result in cancellation. Exceptions are sometimes available for work in northern Australia or for some specified work in regional areas, but these must be specifically approved — they are not automatic.

What Documents Do You Need for the Subclass 417?

The Subclass 417 application is lodged entirely online through ImmiAccount. • ATO income statements or superannuation records if employer is no longer contactable
  • All standard first year documents also required

How We Help

Our Visa Process

01

Eligibility Confirmation and Country Check

We confirm your passport's eligibility for the Subclass 417, check the applicable age limits for your nationality, and assess whether the Subclass 417 or Subclass 462 is the right pathway for your country. We also advise on the UK exemption for specified work if applicable.

02

First Year Application Preparation

We prepare and manage your Subclass 417 application through ImmiAccount, ensuring the application is complete, funds evidence is correctly presented, and health and character requirements are addressed. We manage the process from initial lodgement through to visa grant.

03

Specified Work Assessment for Second and Third Year

For holders approaching their second or third year application, we assess the specified work completed against the current eligible industry and postcode list — including the expanded list effective from April 2025 — and advise on whether the work meets the requirements. We identify any gaps and advise on what can be done before the first year visa expires.

04

Second and Third Year Extension Applications

We prepare and lodge the second and third year Subclass 417 extension applications, ensuring the specified work evidence is properly compiled and presented. We advise on the correct timing of the application — including whether to apply onshore or offshore — and on the tax implications of each year's earnings.

05

Onward Visa Pathway Planning

For working holiday makers who want to stay in Australia beyond three years, we assess what onward visa pathways are available — including the Subclass 482 employer-sponsored pathway, state-nominated skilled visas, and the Subclass 491 regional pathway — and advise on what steps need to be taken during the working holiday period to build the strongest possible profile.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q
Which countries are eligible for the Subclass 417?
The Subclass 417 is available to citizens of 19 countries: Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom (including BNO passport holders). If your country is not on this list, check the Subclass 462 Work and Holiday Visa, which covers 41 different countries.
Q
What is the age limit for the Subclass 417?
The age limit is 18 to 30 for most eligible countries. Citizens of Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, and the United Kingdom (including BNO passport holders) can apply up to age 35. Age is assessed at the time you lodge the application — not when you enter Australia.
Q
What is specified work and why does it matter?
Specified work is paid employment in approved industries — primarily agriculture, fishing, pearling, tree farming, mining, construction, regional tourism, and disaster recovery — conducted in eligible regional postcodes. Completing the specified work requirement is what qualifies you to apply for the second year (88 days required) and third year (176 days required) Subclass 417 extensions. Without the right specified work, you cannot extend your stay beyond the first year. UK citizens are exempt from specified work requirements under the Australia-UK FTA.
Q
Can I work for the same employer for the whole year?
No. The Subclass 417 limits work with any single employer to six calendar months. Working for more than six months with the same employer is a breach of your visa conditions and can result in cancellation. An exception can be granted for some regional or northern Australia work, but this must be specifically approved — it does not happen automatically.
Q
How long does the Subclass 417 take to process?
The Subclass 417 is typically processed within two to four weeks for most applicants from standard passport countries. Some applications that require additional health checks or character assessments take longer. Second and third year extensions can take longer if the specified work evidence requires assessment. Decision-ready applications with all evidence submitted at lodgement process faster.
Q
Can I study in Australia on the Subclass 417?
Yes, but only for up to four months. Condition 8201 restricts study to a maximum of four months while holding the Subclass 417. This includes part-time study, language courses, and vocational training. If you want to study for longer, you will need to apply for a Student Visa (Subclass 500) separately.
Q
What happens after my three years on the Subclass 417?
After exhausting three Subclass 417 grants, you cannot apply for another first year 417. The most common onward pathways are the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa through an employer willing to sponsor you, state-nominated skilled migration through the Subclass 190 or Subclass 491, or the Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa for applicants who have built a competitive points score. Professional advice is strongly recommended before your Subclass 417 period ends.

Why Migration Republic

Why Choose Migration Republic?

The first year Subclass 417 is one of the most straightforward visa applications in Australia — but the second and third year extensions are where the complexity lies, and where getting the wrong advice costs a year in Australia. The specified work list was updated in April 2025. The eligible postcodes for disaster recovery work were expanded. The evidence standards for what constitutes a valid day of specified work are specific and enforced. And for UK citizens, the exemption from specified work requirements that came into effect on 1 July 2024 is not always well understood.

April 2025 Specified Work Update

We stay current with every change to the working holiday framework. We assess specified work correctly against the current list and postcodes — including the expanded bushfire and disaster recovery areas effective from April 2025.

UK Exemption and Country-Specific Advice

We correctly advise UK citizens on the exemption from specified work requirements, and ensure applicants from each of the 19 eligible countries understand exactly what applies to their nationality — including age limits and any country-specific conditions.

Onward Visa Pathway Planning

For working holiday makers who want to stay in Australia beyond three years, we assess onward visa pathways and advise on what steps to take during the working holiday period to build the strongest possible profile for the next visa.
