MINING ENGINEER (EXCLUDING PETROLEUM) | ANZSCO 233611
Skilled Migration Pathway
Australia's iron ore, gold, lithium and critical minerals exports all depend on engineers who can work out exactly how to extract those resources safely, efficiently and profitably from the ground. That is the work of a Mining Engineer, and Australian mining companies, particularly in Western Australia and Queensland, are finding it hard to recruit enough experienced engineers locally. For overseas Mining Engineers, ANZSCO 233611, this is opening up genuine employer sponsored pathways into Australia, through the same national engineering assessing body used across all engineering occupations.
This guide covers what a Mining Engineer actually does day to day, the qualification and English standards involved, and how the two most common employer sponsored routes work: the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa and the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme.

Check Business EligibilityWHAT DOES A MINING ENGINEER DO?
A Mining Engineer under ANZSCO 233611 plans and directs the engineering aspects of locating and extracting minerals from the earth. The occupation sits within ANZSCO Unit Group 2336, Mining Engineers, and carries a Skill Level 1 rating in Australia. Registration or licensing may be required depending on the specific role and jurisdiction. As the occupation title indicates, this code specifically excludes petroleum engineering, which is classified under a separate ANZSCO code (233612).
Typical day to day duties include:
- Conducting preliminary surveys of mineral deposits with prospectors, geologists, geophysicists and other engineers to determine the resources present and the feasibility of extraction
- Determining the most suitable methods of ore extraction, taking into account depth of overburden and the physical characteristics of deposits and surrounding strata
- Preparing operation and project cost estimates and production schedules, and reporting progress, production and costs against budget
- Designing and specifying mine layouts, access routes, ventilation systems and ground support requirements for underground and open cut operations
- Overseeing mine safety systems and procedures, and ensuring compliance with mining safety legislation and regulations
- Coordinating with geologists, metallurgists and geotechnical engineers on ore body modelling and extraction planning
- Monitoring mine performance and recommending improvements to productivity, safety and resource recovery
SUBCLASS 482 FOR MINING ENGINEERS – CSOL LIST
The Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa replaced the older Temporary Skill Shortage visa in December 2024, and a new occupation list came with it. The Core Skills Occupation List, known as the CSOL, brought together the previous strategic skills lists into one single list covering several hundred occupations across professional, trade and technical fields.
Mining Engineer (excluding Petroleum) sits on the CSOL under the code ANZSCO 233611. This is the code an employer nominates against for a Core Skills stream 482 visa, and it is also the same code used where the occupation applies to the Direct Entry stream of the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme.
SUBCLASS 482 ANZSCO REQUIREMENT FOR MINING ENGINEERS
Your nominated occupation has to genuinely reflect the work you will actually be doing for your sponsoring employer. The Department looks past job titles and checks the duties set out in your nomination against the ANZSCO definition for 233611.
If the role on paper is genuinely focused on oil and gas extraction rather than mineral mining specifically, the nomination may need to be assessed against the related but distinct occupation of Petroleum Engineer instead, which is classified separately and excluded from this code. If the role is closer to geotechnical investigation and foundation engineering more broadly, Geotechnical Engineer may be the more accurate code. Getting the occupation description right at this stage matters, since Engineers Australia reviews the specific engineering discipline reflected in the qualification and employment evidence.
ANZSCO requirement for Mining Engineers includes a Bachelor degree or higher qualification majoring in mining or a closely related engineering field, with registration or licensing potentially required depending on the specific role (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
SC 482 VISA REQUIREMENT FOR MINING ENGINEERS
To be granted a Subclass 482 visa under the Core Skills stream as a Mining Engineer, applicants generally need to meet the following:
- A genuine, approved sponsor. Your employer, typically a mining company or mining engineering consultancy, must be an approved Standard Business Sponsor, or in the process of becoming one
- An approved nomination for ANZSCO 233611, with a salary at or above the Core Skills Income Threshold and the market rate for the role
- A positive Engineers Australia skills assessment, confirming your qualification and competencies meet the required engineering standard
- English requirements as outlined further below, unless an exemption applies
- A clear health examination through an approved panel physician
- Police clearance certificates from every country lived in for twelve months or more
The Core Skills Income Threshold, which sets the minimum salary an employer must offer for a Core Skills stream nomination, is indexed and reviewed every year, so it is always worth checking the current figure on the Home Affairs website before a nomination is lodged. The visa itself can be granted for a period of one to four years, depending on individual circumstances, and a partner and dependent children can be included as secondary applicants.
SUBCLASS 482 VISA APPLICATION CHARGES
Visa application charges are indexed and change from 1 July each year. The government charges are structured as a base charge for the main applicant, a matching charge for each adult dependent aged 18 or over, and a reduced charge for each dependent child under 18. Because these figures move every financial year, it is worth confirming the current charge on the Home Affairs website at the time of lodgement rather than relying on a figure from a previous year, and budgeting separately for any nomination fee, the Skilling Australians Fund levy paid by the employer, and the Engineers Australia skills assessment fee.
SKILLS ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT FOR MINING ENGINEER – SUBCLASS 482 SKILLS IN DEMAND (SID) VISA
Engineers Australia is the designated assessing authority for Mining Engineer (excluding Petroleum) (ANZSCO 233611), not VETASSESS.
Applicants with a Bachelor of Engineering accredited by Engineers Australia, or a qualification from an institution in a country that is a full signatory to the Washington Accord, the Sydney Accord or the Dublin Accord, can generally proceed through a qualification based pathway. Applicants with other qualifications, including non accredited qualifications or those relying substantially on experience, generally need to complete a Competency Demonstration Report, commonly referred to as a CDR, addressing Engineers Australia's stage one competency standards through three career episode reports, a summary statement and a continuing professional development statement.
A positive Engineers Australia skills assessment outcome does not expire, though the assessment result itself is generally only accepted as current for visa purposes for three years from the date of issue.
The Engineers Australia assessment pathway generally works as follows:
- Pathway A: applicants with an accredited Australian qualification, or a qualification from a Washington Accord, Sydney Accord or Dublin Accord signatory country, follow a qualification based assessment
- Pathway B: applicants with other qualifications, or those relying substantially on experience, generally need to prepare a Competency Demonstration Report addressing Engineers Australia's stage one competencies for professional engineers
- Career episode material for CDR pathway applicants should focus on mine planning, extraction engineering, production support and safety related engineering work to align clearly with this occupation
Applicants should provide comprehensive documentary evidence, including:
- Certified copies of academic transcripts and qualification documents
- Employment reference letters, employment contracts, payslips and taxation records supporting the claimed employment
- For CDR pathway applicants, three career episode reports, a summary statement and a continuing professional development statement addressing Engineers Australia's competency standards
- Identity documents and any other supporting material specified in Engineers Australia's current application guidelines
Because the Competency Demonstration Report pathway involves detailed technical writing against specific competency standards, applicants relying on this pathway should allow more preparation time than those eligible for the qualification based pathway.
SUBCLASS 186 FOR MINING ENGINEERS – EMPLOYER NOMINATION SCHEME
The Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme is Australia's main permanent employer sponsored visa, and for many Mining Engineers already working in Australia on a 482 visa, it is the natural next step. The Direct Entry stream is the relevant pathway for applicants who have not yet worked long enough with their employer to qualify for the Temporary Residence Transition stream, or who are applying from outside Australia altogether.
Unlike the 482, a grant under the 186 gives the applicant and their family permanent residency from the day it is approved, with no further visa renewals needed.
SC 186 VISA REQUIREMENT FOR MINING ENGINEERS
For the Direct Entry stream, applicants generally need to meet the following:
- A nomination from an approved Australian employer for a genuine, full time, ongoing position as a Mining Engineer
- A salary that meets or exceeds the relevant income threshold and the market rate for the role
- A positive Engineers Australia skills assessment that is current at the time of application
- At least three years of relevant work experience, unless exempt from the skills assessment and experience requirements
- Being under 45 years of age at the time of application, with limited exemptions
- Competent English, at an overall IELTS score of 6.0 with no band below 6.0, or an accepted equivalent
- Health and character clearances
This is a noticeably higher bar than the 482, both on English and on work experience, which is one reason many Mining Engineers use the 482 as a stepping stone before applying for the 186.
SKILLS ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT FOR MINING ENGINEERS – SC 186 VISA
A positive Engineers Australia skills assessment is required for Direct Entry 186 applicants in this occupation, and it needs to be current, generally issued within the last three years, at the time the visa application is lodged.
The same qualification based and Competency Demonstration Report pathways described above apply here. Because the Direct Entry stream also requires three years of relevant experience, it helps to start gathering employment evidence, reference letters and, where relevant, career episode material well before applying, since the CDR pathway in particular can take time to prepare properly.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Every skilled or employer sponsored visa in Australia comes with an English language test, and the score needed depends on which visa is being applied for. For Mining Engineers looking at the 482 and 186 pathways, the bar is different at each stage, which catches a number of applicants off guard.
For the Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa, Core Skills stream, applicants generally need Competent English, which works out to an overall IELTS score of 5.0 with no band below 5.0, or an accepted equivalent test result.
For the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme, Direct Entry stream, the standard is higher. Competent English here means an overall IELTS score of 6.0 with no band below 6.0. Where mandatory licensing or registration applies to a specific engineering role, applicants generally need to meet whichever English standard is higher, the visa requirement or the level needed for that registration.
| Visa | English Standard | IELTS Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 482 Skills in Demand (Core Skills) | Competent English | 5.0 overall, no band below 5.0 |
| 186 Employer Nomination (Direct Entry) | Competent English | 6.0 overall, no band below 6.0 |
EXEMPTIONS ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Citizens of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, New Zealand and the Republic of Ireland are generally exempt from formal English testing, along with applicants who have completed a set period of study conducted in English. Test results typically need to be current within three years of lodgement, so if a score is getting old, it is worth sitting the test again before applying rather than finding out partway through processing.
REGISTRATION AND LICENSING IN AUSTRALIA (MINING ENGINEER)
A positive Engineers Australia skills assessment and an approved visa get an applicant through the migration process, but they do not automatically confer the right to use a protected title such as Chartered Engineer, or to practise in roles where state based professional engineer registration is legally required. Registration requirements for engineers differ across Australian states and territories, and some jurisdictions, including Queensland (RPEQ), Victoria (PEV), and New South Wales, require professional engineers to be registered before offering professional engineering services.
Mining is also a heavily regulated industry in its own right, and certain senior mine roles, such as statutory mine manager or underground supervisor positions, generally require specific state based mining industry certificates of competency in addition to an engineering qualification. Many mining engineers pursue Chartered status (CPEng) with Engineers Australia or Chartered Professional (CP) status with AusIMM, which supports career progression into senior technical and mine management roles.
SALARY EXPECTATIONS IN AUSTRALIA
| Role/Level | Salary Range (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Graduate Mining Engineer | $91,000 to $109,000 |
| Mining Engineer | $120,000 to $150,000 |
| Senior Mining Engineer | $150,000 to $200,000+ |
| Western Australia and Queensland average | $145,000 to $180,000+ |
Mining Engineer is consistently one of the highest paid engineering occupations in Australia, and Western Australia and Queensland in particular offer some of the strongest salaries in the country, reflecting the scale of their iron ore, gold, coal, lithium, and critical minerals operations. Many mining engineering roles, especially in remote locations, include fly-in fly-out (FIFO) arrangements with site allowances that add significantly to base salary.
WHY MINING ENGINEERS ARE IN DEMAND IN AUSTRALIA
- Australia's position as a major global exporter of iron ore, gold, lithium, copper, and critical minerals sustains strong, ongoing demand for mining engineering expertise
- Growth in critical minerals and battery metals extraction, driven by global demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy supply chains
- A significant share of the experienced mining engineering workforce is approaching retirement age, adding to pipeline pressure across the sector
- Remote and fly-in fly-out (FIFO) working arrangements common in mining make it harder for some Australian workers to fill these roles
- The inclusion of Mining Engineer on the Core Skills Occupation List reflects this recognised, ongoing shortage of qualified mining engineers at a national level
